A Message from Mickey: A New Chapter for Mickey Kids
Mickey Kids Eikawa School has now been operating for 13 years, and during that time, we have seen many changes.
For example, when we first opened, telephone calls were the most common way for parents to communicate with us. Today, LINE messages have become the preferred method. Times change, and as a school, we must continue to learn and adapt.
One philosophy I have always encouraged is “START NOW!” I have long believed that it is never too early for children to begin experiencing English.
Young children are especially receptive to the sounds and rhythms of language. Even when they are not speaking very much, they are listening, absorbing, and developing what I often call their English ear. Over the years, I have watched children who started very young become wonderful English speakers, and I am still in contact with some of them today.
However, I have noticed an important change in recent years.
Children who begin studying with us around kindergarten age often continue for an average of around five years. Some of my students have been attending Mickey Kids for ten years or more, something that makes me incredibly proud.
On the other hand, we have increasingly seen children who begin at a younger age leave after only one or two years.
There may be many reasons for this. Perhaps parents have different expectations about how quickly very young children will begin speaking English. Perhaps family schedules or priorities change.
Whatever the reason, when English education ends after such a short period, it becomes more difficult for children to build upon the listening foundations they have developed.
This has led me to reconsider the best starting age for our school.
Why We Are Changing Our Starting Age
Going forward, Mickey Kids will welcome new students beginning at age four, after they have completed approximately one year of kindergarten.
We have chosen this age deliberately. By the time children have experienced their first year of kindergarten, they have had an opportunity to become familiar with group activities, develop friendships, and gain confidence in a classroom environment.
Kindergarten also gives parents and teachers time to better understand each child’s individual personality, learning style, strengths, and areas where additional support might be helpful. This includes children with developmental differences or neurodivergent learning needs.
The more I understand about a child, the better I can adapt my teaching to help them feel comfortable, confident, and successful.
Of course, our WELCOME CLASS will continue to be a playful, flexible introduction to English.
It is intentionally less structured than our BRONZE, SILVER, GOLD, PLATINUM, and ADVANCED classes. We encourage children to learn through games, movement, interaction, and natural communication rather than traditional studying.
For many children, I believe beginning around age four, after their first year of kindergarten, provides an excellent foundation.
After their first year at Mickey Kids, we can evaluate their individual progress together with their parents and decide whether they would benefit from another year in WELCOME CLASS or are ready to move into BRONZE.
This has been a successful path for many of our long-term students.
More Than Just English Lessons
One of the greatest joys of teaching at Mickey Kids for 13 years has been the relationships I have developed with my students and their families.
I have watched children grow, develop confidence, discover their interests, overcome challenges, and gradually become the people they are today.
And that is something very special to me.
I don’t want to be a teacher who spends just one year with a child and then says goodbye.
I want to be part of their childhood journey.
I want to help them discover not only what they can say in English, but also who they are and who they can become.
Of course, life is unpredictable. Families move, schedules change, and priorities evolve. We cannot know what the future will bring.
But I believe this change will give more children the opportunity to develop lasting relationships with our school, build strong English skills, and gain valuable life skills along the way.
Younger Brothers and Sisters Are Still Welcome!
Although our enrollment policy is changing, our welcoming atmosphere is not.
Younger siblings are still welcome to accompany their families and spend time in the classroom when appropriate.
Even if they are simply playing nearby, they are hearing English and becoming familiar with the environment.
Sometimes a younger brother or sister wants to join an activity with their older sibling, and I have always loved encouraging those moments.
When your child is approaching the end of their first year of kindergarten, we’ll be ready to welcome them to Mickey Kids.
We look forward to meeting them, getting to know their personalities, and beginning what we hope will be a wonderful journey together.
And, of course, we look forward to welcoming the rest of your family, too — including their little brothers and sisters!
